Refurbishment of listed office buildings

On behalf of Wyre Forest District Council, Interclass was contracted to redevelop Green Street Depot located in the heart of Kidderminster.

The design and build project saw the sensitive restoration and refurbishment of two locally listed buildings to provide contemporary office accommodation, including a new customer contact centre.

The buildings, which date back to the late 1800s and early 20th century, form part of the Green Street Conservation Area and were originally constructed for the pumping and treatment of the towns water.

Subject to a number of less-than-sympathetic extensions and neglect over the years, incredible efforts were made to ensure that the character and integrity of the building’s fabric and historic features were enhanced during the transformation. This included extensive brickwork repairs, alongside new service installations and demolition works which have provided upgraded, fit-for-purpose facilities whilst also enabling the depot to operate with greater efficiency.

The site, home to the council’s frontline service teams, remained fully operational during construction and as such, working collaboratively with our client and end users was key to the project’s success.

The project has been shortlisted for the 2021 Architects’ Journal Retrofit Awards.

Testimonial

"Whilst at Interclass we always enjoy building new and state-of-the-art facilities we are equally excited and driven when presented with the opportunity to repurpose old and historic buildings. Green Street gave us a great opportunity to inject a modern up-to-date feel whilst ben sympathetic to the history of the old buildings."
