Construction begins on Walsall’s historic Guildhall creative hub

We’re proud to announce that work has officially begun on the much-anticipated restoration and transformation of Walsall’s Grade II listed Guildhall* into a Creative Industries Enterprise Centre (CIEC).

Appointed through the Constructing West Midlands Framework, Interclass will lead the careful refurbishment of this iconic landmark—most recently used as an Italian restaurant—into a dynamic space designed to support local creatives, entrepreneurs, and makers.

The scheme is funded by Arts Council England’s Cultural Development Fund and the Government’s Towns Fund, with the aim of breathing new life into Walsall’s town centre while nurturing the region’s growing creative economy.

“We’re proud to be starting work on the transformation of Walsall’s historic Guildhall. With strong local ties and a continued presence in the area, we’re pleased to support a project that brings new life to a key landmark while helping grow the town’s creative community. As part of our commitment to social value, we’ll also be working to create opportunities that benefit local people and businesses throughout the delivery of the project.”
— Des O’Neill, Managing Director, Interclass PLC

The new Creative Industries Enterprise Centre will provide a hub where artists, designers, and makers can access specialist equipment, develop new skills, and grow sustainable businesses. The facility will offer space for a wide range of creative practices—from leatherworking and woodworking to fashion design and digital art.

Leading the initiative is Walsall-based Urban Hax, who will manage and operate the centre in partnership with Walsall Council.

“We’re really excited to see spades in the ground at the Guildhall and look forward to its opening next year.
The Guildhall will offer space for a wide variety of creative businesses and makers; from leather workers and woodworkers to fashion designers and digital artists. Through funding secured by the council, we are able to invest in specialist equipment and machinery to help support local creatives to grow their businesses and hone their skills.”

— Geoff Henderson, Co-Director, Urban Hax

Urban Hax has been instrumental in Walsall’s creative sector, including delivering the town’s first MakerFest in 2024. The group is already working with the council on the second edition, taking place Saturday 13 September 2025—a fitting lead-up to the Guildhall’s grand opening in summer 2026.

“It’s great to see work starting on the Guildhall and I’m looking forward to seeing the building brought back into use.
This project is a great example of how we can diversify town centre buildings and create spaces to bring the community together. Walsall is a hub of creativity, and with the right facilities, there is real opportunity to support and grow creative talent.”

— Councillor Adrian Andrew, Associate Leader, Walsall Council

With additional funding of £20 million recently secured through the Government’s Community Regeneration Partnership, further investment will be made into specialist tools, equipment, and enhanced facilities for the CIEC.

Construction is due to complete in Spring 2026, with the Guildhall set to reopen in early summer.

Interclass is working alongside Gleeds, CPMG Architects, and Cundall to deliver this landmark scheme.
