New Theatre Complex, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital

Interclass worked alongside ModuleCo Healthcare to deliver Phase 1 of a new theatre complex at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, one of the biggest specialist orthopaedic units in Europe.

The two-storey building, located at the centre of the hospital’s site, comprised four operating theatres, a six-bed recovery suite, a 12-bed inpatient ward and an eight-bed ward.

An off-site, modular approach meant we were able to streamline the construction process and deliver this project without disrupting the day-to-day running of the hospital.

The work has significantly increased capacity, with the complete complex expected to allow up to 2500 additional patients to be treated each year and has also boosted the local economy through the creation of 130 new jobs in the region.

Phase one of the project, which opened in December 2019, also picked up ‘Offsite Project of the Year’ at the Building Awards 2020.
