Interclass to Extend New Special Educational Needs School

Interclass has been appointed by Sandwell Council to build a new special educational needs (SEN) facility at The Meadows school in Oldbury for children aged 9-19 years of age. The £900k contract for the school extension was procured through the Constructing West Midlands framework.

Comprising a three-classroom facility with supporting accommodation and circulation space, the new SEN building’s design, functionality and layout has been designed to support the expansion of the school with an increase of children with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD).  The new building will be completed in April 2022.

The Meadows School is one of four SEN schools in the borough of Sandwell and the only secondary school which can meet the needs of children with PMLD including those who are bed-bound.

Des O’Neill, Managing Director at Interclass said: “Our team is delighted to have been appointed to deliver this key project for Sandwell Council and we are incredibly proud to be able to support the expansion of The Meadows school.

“As a main contractor, we are always aware of the part we play in helping to shape and improve lives.  This is especially the case when it comes to designing and delivering a special educational needs school environment. We are looking forward to designing the new purpose- built facility around the needs of the students and to providing them with a secure, inspiring and engaging space where they can receive high quality education and learning.”

Councillor Karen Simms, cabinet member for children and education, said: “We are looking forward to working with Interclass to provide a new three classroom block at The Meadows School in Oldbury.

“These extra classrooms will mean we are able to provide much-needed school places for children in Sandwell and more children will benefit from the expertise of the staff at The Meadows School.”
