Construction is progressing well at the new Pens Meadow Special School in Pensnett, a purpose-built facility that will provide specialist education for children and young people with complex needs.
Interclass is proud to be delivering this multi-million-pound scheme, which is being developed in partnership with Dudley Council. Once complete, the new school will accommodate up to 155 pupils aged 3 to 19, along with a dedicated nursery assessment unit for the borough.
Designed by the council’s corporate landlord design team and built by Interclass, the new facility will enhance the borough’s capacity to support pupils with severe learning difficulties, autism, and profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD).
Key Features of the New School:
- A modern hydrotherapy pool to support physical therapy and sensory needs
- A rebound pit (sunken trampoline) to aid motor skill development and promote exercise
- Therapy rooms, outdoor learning areas, forest school zone, and adaptable classrooms
- A focus on sustainability, including PV solar panels and air source heat pumps
The building is now nearing weather-tight status, and internal areas such as classrooms, the food technology room, dining hall, and nurses’ room are all taking shape. Once complete, it will provide a transformative learning environment tailored specifically to the needs of its students.
“We’re excited to bring this cutting-edge facility to life, and achieving the milestone of making the building weather-tight is a significant step forward. We look forward to seeing how these new facilities will positively impact both the students and the broader community for years to come.”
— Des O’Neill, Managing Director, Interclass PLC
The project has been warmly welcomed by school staff and the local authority:
“We recently ventured inside our new school. It was amazing to see the progress, sizes of the rooms and specialist areas. The home learning room is huge and the rebound room and hydrotherapy pool will offer amazing opportunities for pupils with physical needs.”

“I’m delighted with the progress of the build. The new Pens Meadow Special School will, once complete, be an asset to the borough. I look forward to welcoming the children to their outstanding new facilities soon.”
