New Almshouses Development Completed

We’re proud to announce the successful completion of a major redevelopment project for The James Charities on Stuart Street, Nechells, Birmingham.

The £2.2 million scheme has delivered ten high-quality independent-living apartments and upgraded communal facilities on the historic site of the former St Clement’s Church. Designed by KKE Architects, the project has carefully retained and restored the original Victorian façades, ensuring the new development celebrates the heritage of this long-established almshouse community.

Part-funded by Homes England and the Justham Trust, with support from the Almshouse Association and Charity Bank, the redevelopment provides modern, energy-efficient accommodation for residents over the age of 55 in need of affordable housing.

Des O’Neill, Managing Director at Interclass, said:
“We are delighted to hand over this important project to The James Charities. From the outset, our aim has been to honour the historic significance of the site while creating quality, future-proofed homes that will support residents for many years to come. It has been a privilege to work with a charity whose values so closely align with our own commitment to community impact.”

Delivered through the Constructing West Midlands framework, close working relationships between Interclass, The James Charities, KKE Architects, and the wider project team ensured a smooth delivery on a complex and sensitive site.
